Voter Registration for Renters
Nina’s voter registration bill is a simple idea with real democratic impact: when renters receive their move-in paperwork, they should also receive voter registration information.
Moving is one of the moments when people are most likely to lose track of their voter registration. Renters, especially younger residents and lower-income residents, move more often and face bigger barriers to staying registered at their current address. Nina’s legislation meets people at that exact moment by adding a voter registration link to the rental information landlords already provide.
The reform is straightforward. At the start of a lease, landlords already provide rental-suitability information, a signed attestation on the unit’s condition, and the Partners for Good Housing Handbook or an equivalent City-required document. Bill No. 250774 adds voter registration information to that packet. The result is a practical, low-cost, low-burden step that helps more Philadelphians participate in the decisions that shape their lives.
